THE CHARACTER

I will be playing an elf on this tour de force.  I almost always played an elf way back then, except for the rare times I played a magic-user.  I often named my Basic elf characters "Falrik Moondance," a name of an NPC I came across in the adventure "Sword of Justice" in issue #92 of Dragon Magazine.  Since I am integrating that adventure into this campaign, Falrik will be my character's cousin.  After consulting some online resources, I will use the given name "Ralnor."  Nice and simple

I am not doing anything random with rolling the character, any more than I did after the first couple times I ever created one.

As I know I am also going to play O2 Blade of Vengeance, Ralnor will be from Dorneryll in Alfheim, and he replaces the character Erystelle in that module.  He is therefore destined to be a great hero, so I have given him pretty good stats- he has a +2 bonus in his prime req's and +1 in everything else.  His family is also well to do, so he is starting with max gold- 180 gp.  He is going it alone here, although he may quickly pick up some companions along the way from time to time- namely the warhorse and war dogs Erystelle has with him in Blade of Vengeance.  Ralnor needs all the help he can get starting out!

Weapons + Armor                      Equipment
Chainmail 40gp Backpack 5gp
Shield 10gp Spellbook ---gp
Sword 10gp Iron Rations (1 Week) 15gp
Silver Dagger 30gp 2 Waterskins 2gp
Short Bow 25gp Tinder Box 3gp
20 Arrows + Quiver 5gp 6 Torches 1gp
5 Silver Arrows 25gp 2 Flasks of Oil 4gp

His gear loadout costs 175gp, leaving him with a few coins. Let's say the remainder breaks down to 4gp, 9sp and 10cp.

Of course the character picture I chose is Gilthanas from the Dragonlance Chronicles- the archetypal elf fighter-mage that everyone wanted as their elf character back in the day (well, maybe unless it was Laurana from the same series, instead.)  More nostalgia!

All that is left is the rest of the backstory fill in:

Ralnor is the oldest child of Ardil Moondance and his wife, Thiondil, who are elves from a small holdfast named Dorneryll.  Dorneryll lies in the northernmost reaches of the Canolbarth Forest, in a region of the kingdom of Alfheim the elves call the Emerlas.  His parents think he takes too much after his great uncle Druinder, a retired adventurer who now spends his time smithing wondrous items.  Ralnor has a younger sister, Tormalline, who emulates everything he does, further concerning his parents.

When Druinder recently indicated he needed to travel south into the human lands to deliver several finished pieces and to collect orders for new projects, he asked if Ralnor would like to accompany him.  Ralnor readily agreed, wishing to experience the outside world and see if he truly had a desire to follow in his uncle's footsteps.

In his youth, Druinder Moondance had once been a member of the Grand Duke of Karameikos's elite Elvenguard, and the old elf still maintained business ties in Specularum- the Duke's capitol city- long after Druinder had retired from service.  The current duke, Steffan, was the grandson of the duke Druinder once served.

And so, early one morning, the two elves set off on horseback for the human city of Corunglain, which lay on the River Streel more than 100 miles away in the Republic of Darrokin.  The Republic was Alfheim's nearest geographic neighbor, and in fact completely encircled the elfin kingdom.

From Corunglain they would hire a barge to take them downriver to the republic's capitol city, also named Darrokin.  Druinder told Ralnor that Falric- Ralnor's cousin- lived not more than a day's ride outside the city in a small village named Farstead.  Ralnor had not seen Falric and a long time, and since Druinder would be conducting business for some time in the capitol, he intended to visit his cousin and see how he was getting on.

From Darrokin they intended to book passage on a seaworthy ship to tale them the rest of the way to the city of Specularum.

When they arrived in Corunglain, Druinder headed down to the docks to book their passage, Ralnor lingered in the common room at their inn, where a loud group of magic-users' apprentices boldly traded challenges and tales of the Ghost of Lion Castle . . .
