A pretty simple system. There isn't anything going on in the background, either- this is it. In Pathfinder, initiative modifiers can get astronomical. There's a lot to keep track of- immediate actions, swift actions, free actions, move actions, standard actions, full-round actions. There are just a lot of things going on. By 7th-8th level, a properly built evangelist archetype cleric is doing a handful of things every single round, not counting whatever their summoned creature(s) are doing!
In contrast, this is so straight forward.
My favorite part of the system? Wielding a polearm or two-handed sword means you automatically lose initiative. Sweet!
